Comp shingles around dormer windows

My neighbors have dormer windows on the second floors of their homes. I think they’re called dormers - they are second floor windows that protrude from the shingled roof.

Anyway, there is flashing of course, underneath the windows and on the sides of the windows. The comp shingles on the sides don’t completely cover the flashing. You can see random areas of flashing on the sides of the windows which don’t match the shingles. Is this correct installation? If so, do roofers usually paint the flashing to match the shingles just for aesthetics?

Thanks.

pics would be nice, every situation has an answer, sometimes it gets paint sometimes half ridge and sometimes just exposed,it seems like its done differently in every region,i say if it looks good and doesnt leak and matches all the neighbors then its good :stuck_out_tongue:
