Drip edge

Guys

Will paint stick better to a factory painted drip edge if your planning on painting the fascia anyway?

no it will peel

Yeah, you need a straight galvanized drip edge & have it primed THEN painted.

If this is part of a re-roofing, what color is the new trim going to be? There are a wide variety of paint colors available on the market & it goes beyond the basic ‘white or galvanized’ that most generic big box home improvement stores carry.

Not a specific job in mind. Occasionally customers are planning to repaint the house and do not have the colors picked out at the time of the roof job. So hence the question should I put up painted or non painted if the customer is unsure of their final trim color and will most likely repaint the fascia and the drip edge at the same time. I doubt they will go thru the trouble of priming and then painting even though I would agree that’s the way to go.

Nose, if they are undecided or it’s a non-typical color in mind, what I do is this:

Get galvanized ‘mill’ finish drip edge & put it into their hands with enough advance time so they can prime it & have the drip edge ready for you to install. A simple spray on primer is all they really need & even then, it’s only the outside & very bottom hem of the face that’s required.

I also offer a price option for ME to do this.

Then they can paint it later but the priming function has already been taken care of.

“Quality Edge” brand drip edge has a finish that takes paint well.

If you must paint it.

Hi,

Factory painted drip will take paint and last longer then mill finish.

You just need to degloss the finish. Lite sanding will do the job.

Getting paint to stick to galvinized or aluminum is not the easiest thing to do.

Talk to your painter. Find out what he prefers.

Thanks guys. Great answers.

Just primer it for them. Shouldn’t take you more than 1 or 2 minutes per stick maximum.

Primer sticks to pretty much anything. Paint doesn’t.

Offer that little extra step, and set yourself apart from the other guys.
