How to stop squirrels from chewing lead?

This is an absolute true story…a guy that lives in our wooded neighborhood had this very same problem and he literally typed up a note that read “Dear Squirrel, please stop chewing my chimney.”. He framed it and leaned it up against his chimney. He honestly thought it would work!!! :roll:

They can eat alot of lead. I did a job last week and they had eaten the tops of the covers, and the entire exposed part of the flange, on every lead vent on the roof. There were about seven vents. I think they really, really like lead. I have seen this countless times.
Some one mentioned it earlier, but the way to stop it, some what, is to paint the vents. Most supply houses sell spray paint that matches shingle colors.

thank you for the input. i “painted” the lead with clear geocil. a brushable caulking/sealer. we’ll see how it goes.
