Landmark 30 245 lb/sq vs Malarkey XL 40 for Vancouver, BC?

We have a quote that gives us the option of either one and wanted to see which makes more sense. Price is very similar. Any other tips would be welcome.

House :
1910 heritage style home, 3 yr old extensive renos. 3 story, very steep pitch. Front faces north. Will be a full tear down as we have 3 layers on there now.

Weather :
Here in Vancouver it rains a lot and we’ve been getting heavy (for us) snows the last 2 years. Overall for last year precipitation figures were 76" total distributed as 166 days with almost none to 1/5", 77 days with 1/5-2/5", 42 days with 2/5-1", and 7 days with over 1". That’s mostly rain, though last year we had 3 weeks of waist deep drifts.

Winds aren’t a huge issue - last year we got 7 days with winds over 32 mph and 2 days with winds over 40 mph.

TIA - R.

I’m not far from you.I would go with Malarkeys, they are a top knotch shingle. They cost more money,so if the quotes are similiar, its a no brainer to go for Malarkeys, just as long as the contractor who gave you the price is reputable.Go to the "Roofing Store"in Surrey and compare the 2 side by side. You will see the difference.Certainteed is alot thinner. Also ask the sales rep his opinion on which shingle is better.Malarkeys also have the"zone"which minimizes installation errors. If you have any further questions I’d be glad to help.

Hello Rooster99,

I Agree with JohnK, Malarkey is a far better choice, unless of course yo decide on a 50 yr. roof, then you would want to go with a CertainTeed Landmark TL.

I suggest you stop in at the “Roofing Store” in Burnaby regarding your questions - They can be very helpful. (Lake city way/Lougheed HWY)

If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time.

Check Pabco shingles out…better quality IMO for BC,better price as well.

Pabco, better than Malarkey?I think not.Anyways, how goes it Kage?

I agree with Johnk, IMO, Pabco is right up there with BP and IKO. If you qant a quality 30/40 product, you cant beat what Malarkey has to offer.

Pabcos 15 yrs ago were alot better.Their quality has deteriated over the years.I agree Bps are probably the worst shingles known to man,IMO.

Same as Malarky…they dont even bond now…and always losing granules!

I use Malarkeys all the time, never a problem sealing. They seal almost instantly on a hot day.Don’t want to argue but Pabco and IKO are the worst for granule loss.

Kage has a point. 30 year Malarkey highlander CS do have a problem with granule loss. I try to up sell to the 40 w/AR. They dont seem as bad on a 6/12 and up. But still IMO they’re still better than IKO,BP,GAF/ELK,Pabco,OC.

They may stick in summer but check them out in winter, repairs are easy on a malarkey roof in winter.

I wouldn’t know,I never had to repair a Malarkey roof, lol.Never had any blow-offs with them.

The only difference malarkey has from other shingles…is price…other then that…Nothing. In the last 5yrs when i’ve used them, they lose granules galore, teeth dont line up,and they dont bond…oh yea they got a big fat nail line for the blind roofers, but if you nail on the high side of nail line you only hit one layer instead of both layers, but Pabcos nail line is on both layers…hhmmm, and they stick even in winter…hhmmm, and they dont lose granules…hhmm…aannd they are less DOLLARS!

Hello,
I have to jump in here.
In the 11 years that I have roofed in Alaska I have repaired very few Malarkey Legacy’s. They bond very quickly in the summer(average temp is 65) and they don’t lose their granuals. In the winter we don’t have any issues either(even if it is in the low teens the sun still bonds them.) The Highlander line is not SBS modified and I can’t remember the last time I installed them. I have not installed Pabco in several years so I really can’t comment on them. IKO Sucks(IMO) I have installed them recently and them were sawtoothed and lost a lot of granuals. Very dangerous on a 8/12.

Keith

You must not have used them lately.I have some in front of me and the"zone" you do have a 2" double coverage.I always nail as low as possible and teach my guys the same. The “zone” is for rookies.Pabcos lose way more granules.Saw teeth crooked?Rarely.Everyone has an opinion.I used a lot of Pabcos back in the day, they just aren’t the same now.I’m going to however test your theory on Malarkeys not sealing.I’ll heat em up and seal them in the sun and then throw them in the deep freeze.Like I said I’ve never had a problem with them, never had any blow offs and don’t mind at all paying extra for them.To each their own hmmmmmmm

Heh Keith!I concur,Legacys rock

Hmmmmm…i just did a 60sq. roof with the 40yr malarkeys and they sucked it was a 6/12 pitch but had to use ropes because of the granule loss, aanndd the teeth were NOT straight,I admit when they first came out they were awesome shingles but somewhere along the way they got sloppy,so lately i have been using the pabco i dont have the granule or straightness problem…yet.

Hmmm ok,your right.Whatever, use your Pabco, they’re the best.If you don’t like Malarkeys, then why did you use them?

customers choice…he liked certain color, boy…getting personal about it?

Well I know if I didn’t find a material that was up to my standards I would talk my customers out of it.Like Bp,if a customer wanted one of their colors,I would definitely talk them out.Plain and simple. You think of Malarkey the same I think of Pabcos.Who’s right?
