Need to add attic ventilation

I am installing a whole house fan which requires 1000 square inches of attic ventilation, but I only have about 400 square inches. What is the best way to add this. soffit vents are not an option for me.

got any pictures??

You could use a product called smart vent from DCI. It will work as intake for your home. Heres the draw back you will have to basically almost replace your roof. Drip vent could work but again you will have to tear up some of the roof. Send so pictures of the home so i can give a better idea on what you can do. Im shooting blind here right now.

Soffit intake is required for a shingle warranty to be valid.

Here are some pictures of my roof. I have 3 small gable vents (one is pictured here).

We use this eave vent. Its much easier to install than a “true” soffit vent and works the same.

Only problem is that it should really be done with a new install. If you can’t do any kind of soffit vent and already have three gable vents it may be an option to put a fan inside one gable vent (facing out) and capping another, leaving one untouched for intake. It’s not the best solution but it’s better than putting a fan in with open or closed gable vents and no soffit vent.

GAF makes interior gable vent fans.

timothy71, which shingle manufacturer voids the warranty because of not having soffit vents?

i believe GAF ,STATES IN THEIR WARRANTY THAT BALANCED VENTILATION IS REQUIRED-UP TO INTERPRETATION THOUGH—DCI SMART VENT WOULD WORK BUT YOU WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE 1ST 3 COURSES,CUT THE DECKING,INSTALL THE SMART VENT ,AND REPLACE THE SHINGLES—you should also put ridge vent at the top!

Thanks for all your input. This house is in southern california close to the ocean so the temperature is very mild. What about just adding turbines of eyebrow vents
to the roof. The back of my roof is not visible from anywhere in the yard, so appearance is not an issue

Turbine vents are only effective for a small area around the turbine. They’re better than nothing, but not much. Whatever you do it is best to get all of the air moving in the attic.

GAF’s warranty does not state that balanced ventilation is required. Nor does it state that soffit vents are required.

Is there another manufacturer that will void a shingle warranty if there are no soffit vents?

i said "i believe"because i havent read their specific warranty, but they do have several troubleshooting brochures which state that problems are caused by un-balanced ventilation---realisticly the man is installing a fan and is looking to balance the fans intake to its output, which is areccomendation from the fan mfgr(some of which are made for GAF)

OK trg

Well, maybe timothy_71 can answer the question. I certainly would like to know which shingle manufacturer voids a warranty for not having soffit ventilation.

**"Installing Cobra Ridge vent, Cobra Ridgid Vent II or Snow Country Ridge vent and intake ventillation meeting FHA/HUD 1/300 rule is required for the Golden Pledge Limited Warranty.

Note: Gable end vents…do not provide proper intake for ridge vents. Ridge vents require proper soffit intake ventillation."**

Um, right. Warranty doesn’t cover roof if it is inadequately ventilated…

dennis,i read eave vents to be soffit,or dci smart vent, and that you can have hood or ridge vent, and that their warranty doesnt apply if these situations arent met—how does that statement come across to you???it seems like you proved his point,no???not looking for an argument here, just like to see any other way of interpreting that statement-please

Im just curiouse. Is that the roof after its done.
I notice you have a closed cut valley and a weaved valley and a open valley with metal. Whats up with that?
And at the top of the cap the shingles are not cut. Blow offs.
You must be not done the roof yet? or havent started yet.
Maybe you should get a reroof. I can see alot of mess ups in that roof just by looking at the picture.
Is it going to be roroofed. If not you should think about it.
