Opinions please

Needless to say this has been causing a problem for some time.

My first inclination is to build a big cricket, with a ridge that runs from the center of the dormer back to the main roof. Then, however, I have a place where two valleys converge in exactly the same spot. I am imagining putting some kind of large pan at the bottom of these valleys and valley metal above that would empty onto this pan.

Any other ideas?

Build a saddle for it, problem solved.

A 3 foot roll of ice/water shield and then 24-36 inch aluminum valley flashing. A cricket would be better, but awful large and sightly.

metal valleys with a pan at the bottom, new flashing on the sides of the dormer, and I/W in that whole area, is what i would do.

Exactly what I had in mind. that pan at the bottom will have to be pretty big I think.

Shangle, It looks like an 8/12 tying into barely a 3/12.

What does the nailing/nails look like in the main field?

What is under the shingles?

Looks like a certainteed heather blend about 6 1/2 years old.

Saddles DO work, other side we just steped just like a chimney or skylite and used torch same as you would with back p

Hi Shangle, those hog valleys are real common around here, Agape has the best plan.Good luck-ray

more like a 7 and a 4. Nails did not look terrible, but some areas were questionable. If they decide to tear off the whole roof I will go back with hot dip nails. I would guess age is closer to 10-12 years. Color is right on, but manufacturer must be tamko or old gafs cause they have english dimensions.

I also thought about building a small saddle and doing it in rubber. It is not in a location where it will really be viewed from the ground so the big cricket is probably the way to go.

The quickest cheapest and 100% leakproof way is to roof the area in EPDM rubber. one piece, keep the shingles up a couple of courses and run the rubber under it a good cople of feet. simple and quick without rebuilding the house.

Excellent solution. You are one of the best.

You have recommended a nice and useful solution…

EPDM saddle. Doesn’t have to be very tall/wide in center. 2’ to 3’ would be about right.

I agree 100%. The saddle would be good too, but more expensive.

It really comes down to funds available. Sure the best idea is a cricket and valleys, but is the HO willing/able to pay for that?

Great solution, thanks for sharing.

All these great minds think alike.

Shangle - Did you orginally do it or a builder or what? I cant imagine someone like you that has common sense would do that.

Wonder who the idiot is that thought that wouldnt leak.

Man I’m insulted!!! No, its not mine. Just mine to fix. Its an old building, probably from the 50s. I think it had a metal roof on it originally, and then it was replaced with asphalt shingles about 10 years ago or so. It was probably done in a satisfactory manner originally with the metal and then some bonehead tore it off and roofed it like this.

Thanks to all for your input, we re-roofed the whole thing last week.
