Re-roofing over tar and gravel / removing tar and gravel?

My house in Anchorage, AK currently has a 3/12 pitch tar and gravel roof that is very near the end of it’s life (past in some places). I’m trying to sort out what my options are for replacement.

The only quote I’ve received so far recommends tearing off the existing roof, covering the entire thing with ice and water shield then installing malarky legacy shingles.

First question is, can you install a metal roof over the tar or must you tear it down to the plywood first? There are a fair number of hips and valleys so metal roofing might be a little difficult.

Second question is, what is the best way to tear off a tar and gravel roof if I wanted to do that part myself?

Any suggestions? The roof is well insulated and has good venting/airflow through the attic.

It could be possible that the good insulation
that you are referring to is part of the tar and gravel roof. If you going to strip T&G off of rigid insul, and then install shingles, your going to need a nailable base sheathing. Either way, if you use a cutter and cut the roof into 3 ft squares, you can rip and go…If your going down to the decking with rigid underneath, your throwing away money. I would put recovery board ISO, then a SA granule surface roof.

If it is leaking, you will be putting a band-aid over a festering puss ball,by installing any roof over top…
I have seen this time and time again, when a person thinks it will save them $ going over something, and 5-10 yrs later the entire roof is sagging and they pay through the nose, to find that every thing is gone including rafters, cause they chose not to tear off in the 1st place…
But if you chose to do that I would agree 100% with bad company…,lol, and I am sure you will find someone that will be happy to lay Dr.

yes you can go over t&g w/metal,ive done it dozens of times in the past 30 yrs.you just sweep & shovel off the loose gravel, install nailers around the whole perimeter, get your layout of where your going to fasten your seam clips or screw thru panels & install additional nailers where needed.

Marlarky allows you to put thier shingles on 3/12 as long as you use their underlay it is a heavy SBS based underlay i believe its called "malarky right start"you need to use this to get thier warranty… as for tearing off the tar & gravel sweep the loose gravel off first as long as its not mopped directly to the deck it should come off easy if its mopped to rigid insulation get it in the morning before it has a chance to warm up and it should skin off pretty good…then of couse you’ll have to sheet over your insulation before putting your new roof on

This.

if you did want to tear it off yourself, buy a rip shovel & ax. get under the edge metal w/ your new rip shovel & tear off the metal first. then take your new ax & cut the t&g into squares say 2ft.x2ft. then get the rip shovel under em & pop them up. remember to sweep & shovel the loose rock first. when you ax your sections dont go too hard since its only a plywd. deck.

Hello,

Chances are your roof is tarred over a base sheet straight to the osb or plywood depending on what part of town are you in. Just sweep the gravel off and the use a flat tear off spade(no teeth, you can buy at SBS or Allied) to get under the base sheet and rip it off. Do this before 11 and it should come right off.
You stated that the roof has gone past it’s life in some areas. That alone is reason enough to tear it all off and check for rot. You know snow sits on the roof for quite a while so there probably will be a little damage.
Solid Ice and Water shield would be the way to go especially since you stated that the ventilation is good and the insulation is good. I recommend Grace I&W. You might pay more for it but it is worth it. You can’t go wrong with Legacy’s for the shingles.
If you want metal and are going to do it yourself then I suggest you contact ASC Building Products(349-2727,2441 Cinnabar Loop). They have a variety of panel profiles and they make the panels here in town.

Hope this helps.

Keith
