What is the standard calculation to figure out how much is needed to shingle a ridge with standard 3 tabe shingles.

Are you talking about how many bundles you need?

If so, a bundle of 3-tabs used as ridge should cover nearly 30 ft if I remember correctly. Haven’t used 3-tab for cap in a long time.

30ft=1 bundle ridge caps
72ft=1 bundle starter

26 shingles per bundle 3 caps per shingle 5 inch exposure so

263=78 caps
785=390 inches
390/12=32.5ft per bundle

1/3 square of three tabs would cover 33’x 12" or 33 lineal feet.

Every bundle of english dimension shingles I’ve ever opened

Shangle - What brand of dimensionals has 26? I know what I prefer has 22 per bundle. 3-tabs have 26 I believe.

Metric shingles have 22. English are 26. Here is the math

English dimension-5"x36" exposure =180 square inches per shingle /144 = 1.25 sq/ft of coverage per shingle.
1.25 x 26 = 32.5 sq/ft. per bundle x3 bundles gives you 97.5, or damn close to a square.

Metric shingles 5 5/8"x38.75" = 218" square inches per shingle /144 = 1.51 square feet of coverage per shingle
1.51x22=33.22 sq/ft per bundle x 3 bundles gives 99.66 square feet, or damn close to a square.

Here is something to think about. To run a square of english dimension shingles you have to nail 78 shingles on the roof. To run a square of metric shingles you only have to nail 66 shingles on the roof. Big whoop right? RIGHT. ON A 40 SQUARE JOB, THATS 480 LESS SHINGLES TO NAIL ON THE ROOF. With a metric shingle you basically have to nail the equivalent of 7 less squares on the roof than you would with an english dimension shingle.

Now all 3 tabs in my area are english dimensions (12"x36")

Most arcs are metric (13 1/4"x 38 3/4)

But there are still some english dimension arcs. Lots of GAF are still english, but we also have metric GAF now thanks to Homo depot.

Tamko is the outcast, they are 12"x 37". Couldn’t tell ya.
