Starter strip or no?

Can I shingle my roof without a starter strip and just cement the starting shingles to the felt?

Along the eve no, you need it for water proofing. But along the rake yes, and it will hold down your shingles far better then a starter strip would. Also it needs to be cemented to drip edge, not just felt.

What would hold down the rake better than a starter strip wood?

Cementing the shingles to the drip edge.

Not use a soldier course on the rake and just nail properly.

Thanks for the clarification.

So I finally decided to head into home depot and look at all the materials to determine how much it will cost to reroof my roof.

The only thing I’m having trouble with is,

T&G sheathing or RTD?.

Also how do I know what thickness to use? I know for sure that I have to replace some sheathing. They have a 23/32 and 19/32 measurement which I have no clue what that even means.

And lastly, what asphalt shingles brand do you prefer? They have 3 tiers and the difference per bundle is about $4 but the wind rating differs by almost 90mphs.
