Tricks of the trade

G’day, I am fairly new to roofing, only been at it for about a year now (mainly roof restorations) and was wondering if anyone had any good tricks to make the little things easier. For example, I have seen a lot of roof tilers cutting their trowels down to re point / re bed ridge caps? Does anyone else do this? And do they suggest it? Also i use volleys to walk on roofs, seems to have a lot better grip but hurts your feet to kick up tiles, is there an easy way around that? I have heard of people using a baby shoe over a hammer but who knows it could just be an urban myth. Anyway, any tricks of the trade to make life easier would be great.
Thanks
