Been using 90lb for 16 years. Every roof we tear off always has 90lb and no problems.
The only problem I see with open valley’s is that the valley metal looks like hell before the roof expires, so usually requires a paint job in 15 years to look good.
we use 26g painted metal w shape.Weve been doing it this way about 20yrs now and metal looks fine, faded a little but if done rite nothing else, when we did do closed we used 90 pound too and #30 depending on job.
I use Owens Corning 90 lb roll roofing. BUT i’m not knocking the ice and water sheild. It just does not snow enough in New Orleans.
I also do not, ever, use metal. The ground is so soft here that when big trucks and school buses pass by, the groung really shakes, so over the years, the nails holding the metal down, will start to come back up. This causes the metal to stick up under the roof. However, with a tile roof, you have to use the metal.
So with asphalt shingles, I use the 90, with a california cut on top.

Hope your covering the 90# as I’ve seen a lot of 90# exposed valleys go bad long before the rest of the roof.
Interesting theory on vibration causing fasteners to loosen. I would think the whole roof would loosen up and the house would fall apart.
Valleys loosen up because metal expands and contracts with the temperature fluctuations. This works the fasteners loose.
If youve never had a problem you either are a liar or havent been in business long enough.well you must be a hack, never had a leak.[/quote]
hahahah love this guy. Two posts and already calling people hacks. I would argue but it would be a waste of my life. I can think of only one time I have gone back to fix something of my own and that was the second time I ever laid shingles. Oops.
Sorry but you calling me a hack does not really affect me. Getting called a hack from a guy who I have no knowledge about is not really something to get offended by. I have no idea about the size of your company, your work history, any knowledge you have related to roofing or how respected you and your work is in your local community.
Being called a hack from a guy who doesn’t even have a location in his profile, meaning I have no idea how far away you are from any of my work, doesnt carry much weight behind it.
The reason I say you either have not been roofing long enough or a liar is because its nearly impossible to never have any problems in your lifetime. Of the guys whom I have hired and fired that told me they never had a leak, guess what, they have had leaks, just turns out the decided to forget about the ones the previously had.
If you have never had a leak, congradulations. Now, instead of calling members of this form hacks that you have no knowledge about, try posting information helping others and proving the things you do “know”.
Is it impossible to never have had a leak?Sure my company has,I’ve never had one from my own workmanship.I overdo everything, double and triple check everything.I’ve been in the biz for over 25 yrs.You called me a liar first.I could give 2 turds about the hiearchy on this forum.I came to check it out, maybe get something from it.Does it matter where I’m from?I’m not here to make friends, but to share and read posts.I called you a hack for your comment to me,I never called anyone else anything. So lets start again,Hi I’m Gummit!
The difference in where your from is the difference in the amount of rainfall per year. I am sure someone in seattle has a much better chance of getting a leak than someone in Texas. Also, you have had a leak. Your company is your responsibility. If the roof leaks, who is ultimately liable for it?
To say you personally have never had a leak is something different and that is believeable.
What my post said was 'If youve never had a leak you are either a liar or havent been is business long enough" Never did I say YOU ARE A LIAR. Youve been in business long enough to have a leak as you have stated. Never did you say the phrase “I personally”
Anyways, Congradulations on be successful in the trade for 25 years.
Yes.Hi Axiom.I made up those stories to have a feel for outlooks on shoddy workmanship. It makes me sick some of the scamming scum out there.Look forward to a fresh start here.
